TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS)
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or “TMS”, is a cutting-edge, noninvasive treatment that uses repetitive magnetic pulses to stimulate neurons in the brain. TMS is cleared by the FDA and recommended by the American Psychiatric Association for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Data on real-world effectiveness in the United States reported clinically significant response rates of 58–83% for treatment of depression, and one course of treatment may help individuals stay depression-free for years. TMS has a growing body of evidence supporting its use for the treatment of the following conditions:
Postpartum depression
Additional reasons to consider TMS with SeVA Psychiatry:
Noninvasive & Highly Effective
FDA-Cleared
Covered by most insurance plans for Major Depressive Disorder and OCD
Fewer side effects than medications
Lasting relief
After TMS, people typically report less anxiety and clearer thinking, with better memory and concentration. Request an appointment below to see if TMS is right for you or someone you love.
What happens in TMS? During each 3.5 to 20-minute treatment — depending on the treatment protocol selected by your clinician — you’ll sit in a chair with the magnet over your head. You may feel some muscle tension or tingling near the magnet, but it is not painful. People are fully awake and alert during treatment and are able to walk, talk, and drive afterwards. TMS only affects a small part of the brain and doesn’t require people to be unconscious. Unlike ECT, it does not use electricity, work by causing seizures, or impair memory.
We use Magstim’s Horizon Inspire TMS system, which is FDA-cleared for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder and OCD.
TMS is generally covered by insurance for the treatment of depression and OCD. For other indications, to include addiction, PTSD, and schizophrenia, SeVA Psychiatry offers the most affordable cash pay rates in Hampton Roads. Reach out today!
